The total optical backscatter at 412nm (bb(412)) in m-1, is calculated by adding the particulate backscattering coefficient, bbp, to the backscatter coefficient of seawater, bSW, divided by two (backscatter component only). bbp is a proxy for the abundance of marine particles, including phytoplankton. The total optical backscatter at 532nm (bb(532)) in m-1, is calculated by adding the particulate backscattering coefficient, bbp, to the backscatter coefficient of seawater, bSW, divided by two (backscatter component only). bbp is a proxy for the abundance of marine particles, including phytoplankton.
